Kappa Sigma was traditionally founded in Bologna, Italy in the 1400s. It was created by Manuel Chrysoloras to aid his students at the University of Bologna from an evil tyrant known as Baldassare Cossa. The students would use secret signs and handshakes to remain safe.
Then, on December 10, 1869, five friends brought the Kappa Sigma Fraternity to the United States at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. They started a fraternity, which was slow to grow at first, and began to grow quickly over time. They developed a ritual shortly thereafter which is still used today. The reasons for founding Kappa Sigma are still the reasons it lives on today. The main goal of Kappa Sigma is to become a better man.
Today, the Kappa Sigma headquarters is still located in Charlottesville, VA. The Supreme Executive Committee (SEC) leads the fraternity, similar to the Executive Committee, which leads specific chapters.
